WHERE CAN I MAKE A SPLASH?
You don't need to spend a fortune to stay in some style on the Welsh coast. One of the most glamorous seaside options is Llety Bodfor (01654 767 475; www.lletybodfor.co.uk; doubles from £115, including breakfast and newspaper). It's a B&B in a classic Victorian town house beside the water in pretty Aberdyfi, on the Cambrian coast. The eight light and spacious bedrooms are comfortably chic, with warm colours, leather sofas, roll-top baths - and great views across Dyfi Estuary and Cardigan Bay. The sleek looks have been created by the owner (and interior designer) Ann Hughes, whose attention to detail extends to the epicurean breakfasts served downstairs at a large communal table.

More than a B & B but not quite a boutique hotel, Llety Bodfor, in the pretty mid-Wales coastal village of Aberdyfi, is a real find.
Part of a pastel-painted terrace of Victorian townhouses, the exterior gives little away, but inside, Llety Bodfor comes into its own. The welcoming lounge / bar / breakfast room is all funky sofas and rustic furnishings, with pleasing touches such as a collection of LPs for guests to play, and an honesty bar... views across the estuary and out to sea.
The bed was big and comfy, and the look — Frette linen, brown leather sofa, wide-screen TV and DVD player — was both contemporary and homely... and the bathroom oozed sexiness: roll-top bath, powerful shower and White Company smellies. |

Llety Bodfor brings back memories of childhood seaside holidays in terraced Victorian B&Bs - except that the blend of modern and traditional designs in this townhouse hotel is far more stylish than anything you experienced as a kid.
Rooms are open, airy and elegantly decorated with leather sofas, widescreen TVs and tremendous views across the Dyfi estuary and of the boats bobbing in the harbour. The townhouse style also makes for a great place to hang out and relax if the weather turns sour.
Excellent breakfasts are provided in the lounge, featuring local specialities such as leek and laverbread tart with Pant ys Gawn goat cheese, and Anglesey smoked salmon. The menu changes daily. |

‘Western Mail’
The recently renovated Bodfor Hotel in Aberdyfi is one of interior designer Ann Hughes’ latest projects. And with such fantastic views from every window, who could ask for anything more?
Ann and husband Gareth worked with a local builder to completely renovate and rejuvenate the house and the end product is quite stunning, with the attention to detail meticulous. Llety Bodfor is a relaxing and harmonious haven.
The elegant downstairs offers a comfortable seating and eating area as well as a shop with the three-floor luxury serviced accommodation consisting of a self catering apartment and four suites, two large double rooms and two single rooms. All the rooms are light and spacious, contemporary and classic. |

Then take the bed home with you - along with the sofa, the paintings on the walls and the hotel's homemade soap. All the furniture and fittings in the eight bedrooms and suite are for sale.
Designer Ann Hughes grew up in Aberdyfi but moved to Cardiff before returning to open the hotel with her husband Gareth and their children. 'We've come home for exactly the same reason as the tourists come,' said Ann.
'People are looking for a natural quality of life, a return to old values lost. They want the British seaside as it used to be,' she says, 'but with comfortable accommodation. I think everyone expects their holiday home to be at least as comfortable as their own.'
Each room at the Bodfor is individually decorated and furnished in contemporary style, using furnishings sold in her adjoining shop, Seld (it means Welsh dresser).
The overall effect is one of comfort and designer elegance, but without pretension. The warmth of the reception at the Bodfor and elsewhere in Aberdyfi is an essential part of the resort's appeal. |

Two decades ago, this style of accommodation didn’t exist. Style is the key word here, for Llety Bodfor is about as far removed from the traditional, dowdy seaside hotel as you can get. From the outside it seems conventional enough: a tall Victorian building with those characteristic big bay windows. But open the door, and you’re catapulted into the 21st century.
Llety Bodfor is the creation of Gareth and Ann Hughes. Ann is a successful interior designer – and it shows. There’s no reception as such, in keeping with Llety Bodfor’s ‘contemporary townhouse accommodation’. Instead, you’re greeted by a huge, open-plan room laid out with the minimum of fuss, funky little bar area, comfy leather sofas, piano and sound system. And the ‘wow’ factor also extends to the views across Cardigan Bay. Since Aberdyfi is a stylish little jewel too, it’s all a perfect match.
Although accommodation is B&B only, ever-flexible, ever-helpful Ann and Gareth will make all the necessary arrangements for guests to dine locally.
